One Less Microsoft Product on My Desktop
Well, as of tonight there is one less Microsoft product on my computer at home. I got a free copy of Microsoft Office Professional 2007 at a Microsoft event some time ago. It sat on my desk for months. Then a few weeks ago I finally installed it (as part of my process of rolling back (some might call it an upgrade) from Windows Vista to Windows XP). I don't like the interface. Where is the File->Print menu option? I did start getting used to the UI but I just don't like it. Maybe that interface is the wave of the future, but I still don't like it. Of course MS Office is a resource hog too, so hopefully I'll have a few more resources on my desktop now.
In its place I installed an open source office suite named Open Office. Open Office is currently at version 2.3 and is a mature product. It has everything a small business or home needs and it even reads and writes MS Word and Excel files. And Open Office is free! Whats not to love about this product? Its a feature-packed office suite and its free.
I do such a small amount of work using MS Office I'm sure that OO will do what I need it to do. I guess the next few weeks will tell. Now, if only I knew what to do with this old copy of Office 2007...
