Plankton will Save the World?

I ran across a company named Planktos today. This company is in the business of selling Carbon Offsets. You've got to read about this company to fully understand what they're doing, but basically they're going to increase the number of Plankton in the oceans (by dumping iron into the water - basically like fertilizing the ocean) which in turn will end up soaking up carbon dioxide out of the air and dragging it down into the ocean when the Plankton die. It would remain down in the depths of the ocean for anywhere between 10 and 1,000 years. There are many questions as to the legality of dumping iron into the ocean and whether this will actually make much of a difference to the global CO2 problem, but it sounds interesting. Is it nothing more than a money making scam or is there really something to this? I guess we'll have to wait for the experts to figure it all out for us little guys.

Online Backups

A month ago I tried IDrive.com online backup. It worked OK for a while (nothing special, kind of quirky but it did work) then it totally stopped working. The funny thing is that after I didn't ave an online backup anymore I felt vulnerable. I have other backup processes going, so I'm pretty well protected, but I wanted an online backup again. It was nice knowing that every night it was backing up any files I changed on the computer that day to an off-site location.

So I tried Mozy this time. XDrive, IDrive and Mozy are the ones you see the most when looking around for a free service. XDrive is by AOL and that didn't work right from the moment I installed it. IDrive worked well for a while but then it simply stopped executing the scheduled nightly backup one day. An uninstall and reinstall and generally starting all over again would not fix it. So I moved on to find another solution, which is when I found Mozy.

Mozy is free for up to about 2 gigs. After that its $4.95 a month for unlimited backup storage. I installed it the other day and it seems to work pretty well. Its definitely the best working piece of software out of the three I've tried so far. They also have a Professional service (MozyPro) if you're looking for more power.

In the interest of full disclosure here, the links here will give me credit if you create an account and try the service. I get a quarter of a gig (250mb) and you also get 250mb extra space for using my referral code. So... if you want to try Mozy please use one of these links or just enter the 69CCRN referral code when you sign up.
