Flash Player Problem in Vista

I've been running Windows Vista for a little while now and it has been working fine. I had a couple small quirks to work around but one of the most annoying was that Flash Player just stopped working for me on some websites. I would install Flash Player and it would say that it installed successfully but that website would not recognize that I had Flash Player installed. I found the fix here.

  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash in Windows Explorer. You may want to right-click the Windows Explorer icon and select Run as Administrator.
  • Then right-click on Flash9b.ocx and chose properties.
  • Choose the Security Tab, then set the security for the Everyone Group to Allow Full Control.
  • Do the same for the security on FlashUtil9b.exe.
  • Once you have done this for both files run the FlashUtil9b.exe program and it should install/update Flash Player and tell you to restart. Once you reboot everything works fine.

Good, Fast, Cheap Antivirus Program

So many of the antivirus programs on the market today are getting bloated. Symantec's Notron Antivirus has grown from a simple antivirus program to a program complete with the kitchen sink (see Norton 360). While mainstream products like Norton AV and Trend Micro PC-cillin are good products at good prices I've noticed them getting bloated over the years, requiring more and more memory.

With a recent switch to Windows Vista I was looking for an AV product that would support Vista, give me a price break for use on more than one PC in my home, do one thing (AV) and do it good, be fast and have a small memory requirement. Sounds like a lot to ask for doesn't it? Well, on the advice of a friend I tried NOD32 from ESET Software and I liked it. I tried it on a couple computers for a week then I bought it. It's way smaller, faster and better at catching malware than some of the mainstream products on the market. CNET reviewed NOD32 and gave it a rating of 7.3, with the user's on CNET giving it an average rating of 9.1. About.com says: Though NOD32 lacks the extra bells and whistles found in many other antivirus products, its focus on core competencies - detection of viruses - has not gone unnoticed. NOD32 has earned more VB100% awards than any other antivirus product in history.

I don't know about you, but although I think the fancy UI of the mainstream AV products is nice I want an AV product that is the best at what its supposed to do - detect viruses - and NOD32 fits that description.

Rosie O'Donnell - Bad for America

I think Rosie O'Donnell and people like her are bad for America. It's fine to have their beliefs and its fine for them to voice their concerns, but they need to be reasonable and responsible and have some solid facts to back up their claims. To thrown out such powerful accusations without facts to back them up is irresponsible. Their frustrations are impacting their judgment and they're acting irrationally. These folks are good humans, but bad citizens and they're hurting the country and its people. They should go about their campaign in an orderly fashion, but they won't because they know they don't have the facts to back up their claims, they know that rational people aren't going to listen to this garbage and all they can do is throw hate bombs around and hope they can get some people on their side.

Most recently Rosie said, don't fear the terrorists, they're mothers and fathers. I guess she's saying they humans and kind people just like us. Well, go and read this article where they explain how children were used to blow up a bunch of people. Children in the backseat lowered suspicion, (so) we let it move through, they parked the vehicle, the adults run out and detonate it with the children in the back. Wow Rosie, thats a great bunch of mothers you're siding with!

The world is fighting a terrible evil that wants to kill anyone who does not agree with them and they will do anything to harm us. Even blow up their own kids.

I think Inside Vandy hit the nail on the head in a column on March 27, 2007 titled ABC must fire Rosie O'Donnell when they said; All Americans should be concerned about the insidious and despicable bile that has emerged from Rosie O'Donnell over the past two weeks and should work to remove her from the airwaves. I'm sure she thinks she's doing the right thing. However, in reality she isn't and ABC is just as guilty as Rosie for giving her a mainstream platform to spew her hatred and misguided theories.

If you want to tell ABC how you feel then go to their Contact Us page and enter a comment.

Let's not forget that the all American Disney company owns ABC. You should contact Disney and let them know how you feel too. I'm going to Orlando this summer and have no plans to visit a single Disney attraction or store. There are plenty of other things to do in Orlando.
